Posted on 24 Apr 2019 by Dale Poulter

Joseph Condie was born in 1890 in the village of Sauchie. county of Clackmannanshire, to Andrew and Elizabeth Condie. He enlisted to the Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport) regiment on the 15th May 1916 at the age of 26 years and joined the 1st MT Reserve Depot (ASC) at Grove Park, south-east London where he learned to become a qualified motor driver. At the time of enlistment he was living at 27a Shaftsbury Street, Alloa, county of Clackmannanshire. He embarked for France on the 27 November 1916 where he provided transport for a number of divisions over the the next 2 years and 3 months before being sent to Queen Mary Military Hospital in Whalley in Lancashire for treatment of influenza and then later pneumonia. He was in hospital from the 10th March to 9th April 1919 before rejoining his regiment at Grove Park. He was transferred to Class Z Army Service on the 24th-Aug-1919. The Class Z Reserve was a Reserve contingent of the British Army consisting of previously enlisted soldiers, now discharged. At this time he gave his permanent address as Glebe Point, Sydney, Australia and he applied to be expatriated to Sydney, Australia but it seems he changed his mind only to reapply but eventually his expatriation was cancelled by March 1920. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victoria Medal. There is no more information about what happened to him or his whereabouts after this.
